| Executive Summary: | Spotify has steadily become known as a cool, global streaming platform. But the brand – like Apple Music and other international music streaming services – felt like utilities or platforms. Not as a brand that is part of the South African fabric and culture, and even more than that, a personal choice for South African youth. Considering South Africa has a legacy and history of being a country filled with originators when it comes to music, it felt like no brand really connected with users, particularly the youth. This was the key to Spotify getting the brand love and more fans/users. In a nation that birthed many musical styles such as Kwaito, gqom and amapiano, these are just three of the homegrown sounds that are known around the world. So while Spotify gives our audience access to the sounds from around the globe, we had to create a film that would show Spotify as being for the culture AND part of it, among young South Africans. Showing that it knows who they are, how they live and what the music they love means to them. Creating an emotional connection to the brand. With a bespoke score made up of the various music genres associated with South Africa and loved by the country’s youth – gqom, kwaito, amapiano, hip hop – we created a captivating film that captured the moments where music was integral to the memory and Spotify can be their chosen platform to always connect to it. This film captured 171+ million eyes and 11+ million hearts of South African youth. All whilst emotively sharing “where there are moments, there’s Spotify”. |
