Executive Summary: In 2024, RAPT Creative partnered with Cliff Central to launch The Real Network — a bold reimagining of digital broadcasting in Africa. With podcast consumption skyrocketing and the demand for more immersive, visually dynamic content intensifying, the challenge was clear: how do you scale a traditional podcast studio into a multi-show, multi-format platform within tight physical and budgetary constraints?
The opportunity lay in leveraging early-stage technology not yet widely adopted in African content creation: real-time virtual production using Unreal Engine. RAPT Creative pioneered the first use of live Unreal Engine virtual environments for podcasting in Africa, transforming a modest 116m² studio into a fully dynamic content hub. Through green screen integration and game-engine-rendered virtual sets, the platform could host multiple flagship shows, each with its own unique visual identity — without building a single physical set.
This wasn’t a technical gimmick; it was a brand transformation strategy. The Real Network needed to stand out in a saturated market, attract a younger, more diverse audience, and position itself as a creative and commercial leader in the audio-visual storytelling space. The technology became the enabler of that ambition — allowing the same studio to become an infinite canvas.
Within three months, two flagship shows — The Shady Phodcast and On The Bounce — launched with distinct virtual sets and visual narratives. Viewers and listeners engaged with the platform across YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music and social media, drawn in by the high production value and shareable content formats.
The impact was immediate and measurable over 7 weeks from launch: 955 182 views, listens & downloads; 619 002 unique streams and views; 43 765 subscribers. The Real Network’s shows quickly climbed the Apple Podcast rankings, a few months later, On The Bounce secured over R600,000/month in pre-booked media sponsorships before even airing — a first in the South African podcasting landscape.
But beyond metrics, the campaign set a new precedent: that virtual production could offer creative agility, cost-efficiency, and sustainability in digital broadcasting — especially vital for African media entrepreneurs facing resource constraints.
With zero need for physical set rebuilds, faster turnaround times, and limitless creative potential, The Real Network didn't just relaunch a brand — it redefined what’s possible for content creation on the continent.
By fusing commercial strategy with early-stage technology, RAPT Creative delivered more than a campaign. It delivered a platform — one that continues to evolve, influence, and inspire. This case is a benchmark in how emerging tech, when applied strategically and creatively, can unlock scale, storytelling, and market share in powerful, measurable ways.
